I wonder if any of you have a memory like this? I must have been about two or three years old. Either way, my brother, who is fifteen months younger than me, was still in a high chair. A century of comics and story papers
Shelley and I just returned from a few days away in Kangaroo Valley. There, we discovered a wonderful second hand book and antique store that sucked the time from our day and the money from our pockets as we sorted through ephemera from past decades. I walked away with a pile of fascinating old comics and ’story papers’ dating all...

5 Reasons Why Homepage Copy is so Expensive
By Karri Flatla, snap! virtual associates inc. If you’ve ever shopped for a web copywriter (I cringe to use the word “shop” but that’s what it is), you’ve no doubt come across an apparent oddity in the fee structures. That is, homepage copy costs a great deal more than other types of website copy (services page, about page, etc.). Why is...

Johnny’s Copyblogger Wrap-Up: Week of May 24, 2010
I decided this week that social media has jumped the shark. It happened when I tweeted from the dentist’s chair to announce I was in the dentist’s chair. I thought, “This is something the world needs to know about.” Strangely, the world was apathetic, and no conversations ensued. The system failed. My tweet did not bring...

On Not Playing The Blame Game
Is the Internet marketing industry imploding? I think it is. But if not, it sure seems like it. In fact, it seems to be a sign of the times. For example, we see it with the FTC cracking down on misleading advertisers, Visa and MasterCard closing down merchant accounts for forced continuity billings, and Google permanently banning advertisers for...

Tangibilize Your Copy To Increase Response
I remember 10 years ago. In the wake of rumored proposals to regulate the web, in 1999 the CRTC, comparable to America’s FCC, officially declared that the Internet is not a broadcast medium. Now, that ruling was significant for many reasons. Technically, the Internet is a medium. But the government based its decision on the fact that the web...

The Alfred Hitchcock Secret to Compelling Content and Copy
The McGuffin has been a powerful storytelling device for a long time. It was Alfred Hitchcock who popularized both its use and the name that sounds like it should be on a dollar menu. The McGuffin has a cool job: to keep the plot, character, or situation rolling along. It draws us into the story and drives the action. The McGuffin is often an...

My brother-in-law doesn’t hate me after all. He just doesn’t want to be a copywriter.
My brother-in-law Phil has a real way with words. He’s also something of a stand-up comedian. So I’ve been at him to write freelance for me, but he keeps ignoring me. I thought it was simply ‘coz Paul Cunningham says I’m hard to work for , but it turns out he’s just not comfortable with the whole concept of being...
